Chapter

Fifteen

Find her at all costs.

A text. That’s all Jones could do for me—a fucking text. Not a call back—a text. And a ridiculous one at that.

Find her at all costs. How the fuck was I supposed to do that when I didn’t know the city, the people, or the person I was supposed to find?

“Anything?” I asked when I walked out of the hotel the next night and found Ax in the parking lot, waiting.

“Nothing. They just want her found.”

I flinched. “Same.”

“Back to the apartment. That’s our best hope of finding a lead,” he said and started walking.

“Yeah…” I had my bag full of those tiny liquor bottles from the minibar, but I didn’t dare open one yet. I wanted to see that apartment with a fresh eye and sharp mind first. If we had any hopes of finding that vampire, we needed to find something in there.

The streets were much more crowded now that it wasn’t the middle of the night. The neighborhood buzzed with people, not just groups of guys hiding in plain sight and smoking weed, but plenty of regular people going about their business. It made me nervous that someone had found that apartment already and had called the human police or something. Unnecessary complications.

But to my surprise, once we got to the eleventh floor, we found the apartment exactly as we left it the night before. How curious.

“Somebody else has been in here,” Ax said the second he stepped through the door. “Another vampire.”

“From the covens?” I wondered, closing the door behind me. I smelled the scent right away—rust and rot and some kind of nasty perfume mixed together.

“Probably,” Ax said, stopping in the middle of the ruined living room.

“Isn’t it strange that the police haven’t been here yet? How long ago did this happen?”

But he shook his head. “There’s no blood. Nothing but the scents, and if I had to guess, sorcerers were here about three to four days ago.”

Yeah, I thought the same. “Right, then. Let’s get to work.”

I dropped my bag by the wall, took off my jacket, and started inspecting every little thing in that place.

Even though I was focused, I still felt Ax’s eyes on me every few seconds. It was ridiculous that I knew every time he looked at me, like my body was so in tune with his, when I just met him three days ago. Gods, the sooner we got this over with and went back home, the better I’d feel.

Physically, though, I felt way better than I did two nights ago. Even the voices in my head weren’t as loud tonight. Way better, and not that I’d ever tell him that, but it was him. It was the sex. I hadn’t felt this energetic in a long time. And the fact that I hadn’t had a drink since I woke up was further proof of how fucked up this whole thing was.

We found some unpaid bills in a drawer—Marie Louise Graham was the name of the person who rented this apartment.
